'Akaka Falls State Park Walk | Big Island Hawaii

Visiting ʻAkaka Falls State Park on the Big Island of Hawaii was an unforgettable experience. The short loop trail winds through a lush rainforest filled with bamboo, giant ferns, and colorful tropical plants before revealing one of Hawaii’s most famous waterfalls. At 442 feet tall, ʻAkaka Falls plunges dramatically into a gorge surrounded by vibrant greenery—an incredible sight you can hear long before you see it.

The paved loop is just under 0.5 miles, making it an easy and family-friendly hike. Along the way you’ll also catch views of Kahuna Falls (100'), another beautiful cascade hidden among the dense jungle. We went early in the morning and had much of the trail to ourselves, which made the sounds of birds, rushing water, and rustling leaves even more magical.

Whether you’re chasing waterfalls, photographing Hawaii’s rainforest scenery, or simply looking for a short, rewarding hike near Hilo, ʻAkaka Falls is a must-see stop on any Big Island adventure.
