Backpacking Waimanu Valley in Hawaii (Big Island)

Backpacking into Waimanu Valley on the Big Island of Hawaii was one of the most memorable adventures I had while living on the island. This was a 2-day overnight trip with a couple of friends I met in Hawaii, and the experience was incredible from start to finish. We started at the Waipiʻo Valley Overlook and followed the Muliwai Trail, winding through lush forest, across small streams, and navigating two river crossings. The trail is rugged but beautiful, and each step down into the valley felt like stepping deeper into a hidden paradise.

Once we reached Waimanu Valley, the scenery was jaw-dropping. Towering cliffs surround the valley, and multiple waterfalls cascade into the lush landscape below. We hiked to Waiʻilikahi Falls, a stunning 1,080-foot waterfall, and spent time soaking in the beauty while being careful not to linger directly under the falls to avoid any falling debris. The roar of the water and the sheer scale of the falls made it feel like we had stepped into another world.

Even with the potential dangers—like flash flooding at the rivers and streams—the trip felt safe and exhilarating with the right preparation and experienced friends. This backpacking adventure is one I’d jump at the chance to do again if I were back on the Big Island, and it remains one of my favorite memories of exploring Hawaii’s remote landscapes.
