A Day at Makalawena Beach | Best beaches on the Big Island

Makalawena Beach is easily one of the most stunning white sand beaches on the Big Island of Hawaii, but getting there takes a little effort—which is exactly what keeps it so peaceful and special. We spent New Year’s Day exploring this hidden gem and instantly fell in love with its soft, powdery sand and turquoise water. The beach is perfect for building sandcastles, relaxing in a hammock, or simply enjoying the calm, uncrowded vibe.

To reach Makalawena, we chose the easiest route that doesn’t require a 4x4. We parked at Mahi‘ula Beach and took the short walk across the sand to reach the shoreline. From the far end of Mahi‘ula, a scenic trail continues for about a mile over lava fields and sandy paths until the brilliant stretch of Makalawena comes into view. On the way back, we were treated to an unexpected highlight—a Hawaiian monk seal lounging on the sand at Mahi‘ula!

Despite its remote feel, Makalawena was a popular spot that day, but we still managed to snag one of the best hammock spots after a bit of patient waiting. The combination of adventure, wildlife, and postcard-worthy scenery made this one of our favorite beaches on the Big Island, and well worth the bumpy drive and short hike to reach paradise.
