Waipi'o Valley Hike with kids? | Big Island Hawaii

Hiking into Waipiʻo Valley on the Big Island of Hawaii was an unforgettable adventure. The trail follows one of the steepest roads in the United States, dropping nearly 1,000 feet in less than a mile. We opted to hike instead of drive (4x4 vehicles are required), and the descent was a serious leg workout—especially knowing we’d have to climb back out later.

At the bottom, we were rewarded with the stunning sight of Waipiʻo’s black sand beach, framed by towering cliffs and lush rainforest. We set up our hammocks and spent a relaxing afternoon enjoying the ocean breeze while watching waves crash along the shoreline. A small river flows across the beach and into the ocean, and we even spotted a few wild horses wandering through the valley—an incredible surprise in such a remote setting.

The hike back up was steep and challenging, taking us about an hour to reach the top while carrying our toddler, but the views and experience made every step worth it.
