Captain Cook Monument Hike and Kealakekua Bay Snorkeling | Best snorkel spots on Big Island HAWAII

Hiking to the Captain Cook Monument and snorkeling in Kealakekua Bay was one of the absolute highlights of our time on the Big Island of Hawaii. Widely considered to have some of the best snorkeling in Hawaii, this pristine marine sanctuary is filled with colorful coral reefs, schools of tropical fish, and even the chance to spot larger marine life. We made the trek on Christmas Day, following the Captain Cook Monument Trail down through dry forest to the brilliant turquoise waters below.

The trail itself drops about 1,300 feet over roughly 4 miles round trip, leading to the white obelisk that marks the spot where Captain James Cook was killed in 1779. From the shore, we jumped into crystal-clear water and were immediately surrounded by vibrant reef life. I even had the thrill of seeing an eagle ray glide gracefully across the bay, as well as a few sea turtles hanging out. The mix of history, adventure, and world-class snorkeling makes this one of the most rewarding hikes on the island.

If you’re looking for an unforgettable Big Island snorkeling experience, Kealakekua Bay is hard to beat. Just remember to bring plenty of water for the hot, exposed hike back up, and respect the fragile reef by avoiding contact with the coral. Whether you come by trail, kayak, or boat, the underwater world here is truly spectacular.
