Nakalele Blowhole | Maui Hawaii Coastal Hike

The Nakalele Blowhole on the northwest coast of Maui is one of the island’s most dramatic natural wonders. From the trailhead, we followed a rocky path down toward the ocean where powerful waves surge through a lava tube and shoot through a small opening in the rocks, sending a geyser of water as high as 50 feet into the air. Standing nearby, you can feel the mist and the deep rumble of the ocean beneath your feet—it’s an incredible reminder of Maui’s volcanic power.

On our visit, we explored the rugged coastline and took time to watch the blowhole erupt again and again as the waves rolled in. The famous heart-shaped rock that once framed the ocean view has sadly broken apart, but the scenery here is still spectacular with sharp lava formations and sweeping views of the Pacific. The hike itself is short but over uneven lava rock, so sturdy shoes help with footing. This was an unforgettable stop on Maui’s northwestern shore and a perfect way to experience the island’s wild coastline up close.
