Winter Camping at Lava Hot Springs | Idaho Hot Springs

We did a campout in the middle of winter! We camped at the Portneuf Bend Campground near Lava Hot Springs. The river is a popular fishing spot and has some small waterfalls. There is a train the runs past the campsite that we heard a few times at night. The Hot Springs are close by and have multiple hot pools ranging from 102-112°F.

We used an insulated tent with a small wood stove to keep warm at night. With the stove, we were able to get the tent really warm before we went to sleep. The fire died out during the night though and it was pretty cold when we woke up. You can cook directly on this stove although it was pretty hard to get the temperature correct. We ended up cooking some of our food on a propane burner because it was faster.
