Hawaii's Best BLACK SAND Beach, Pololū Valley | Beach Hike

Pololū Valley, located on the north side of the Big Island of Hawaii, is one of the island’s most scenic spots. The short hike down into the valley takes you to a stunning black sand beach surrounded by steep, jungle-covered cliffs. From the small parking area at the trailhead, it’s about half a mile down to the beach, with incredible views of the coastline along the way. Once you reach the shore, the sweeping scenery and dramatic waves make Pololū one of the most unforgettable beaches in Hawaii.

During my visit, I spent some time exploring the beach and then continued onto the Āwini Trail, which climbs up the far side of the valley. From there, it’s about another mile to reach the Honokane Nui lookout, where a bench and table overlook an incredible view of the next valley and coastline. It’s a perfect spot to take a break and soak in the scenery. One thing to be aware of at Pololū is that small blue jellyfish sometimes wash up on the sand, so watch your step while exploring the beach.

Pololū Valley is a must-do adventure on the Big Island, whether you’re just hiking down to the black sand beach or extending your hike along the Āwini Trail for more panoramic views.
